Core Beliefs & Values
Here is a list of personal values and beliefs that I believe are essential to the role of a modern nurse in today’s evolving society:
Belief Statement
As a student nurse, I believe that to strengthen my ethical foundation and enhance each patient’s experience in the healthcare setting, I must embrace and expand my knowledge of core values like empathy, respect, diligence, and open communication. I am committed to deepening my understanding of these values throughout my education and career to provide patient-centred care that honours and follows each individual’s unique needs.
EMPATHY
I believe that empathy is a fundamental value to have in nursing. It allows us to connect with patients and also other staff on a deeper level. To have empathy as a nurse is to understand the feelings of others and to offer comfort and support during times of vulnerability and need. Patients, their families, and sometimes staff (especially new members or students) will often face challenges that are very difficult, frightening and often overwhelming. By practicing empathy, we can help to ease their experience and make them feel truly heard and valued. This is essential in creating a trusting relationship that is full of compassion, respect, and healing. It reminds us to always prioritize the emotional and physical well-being of our patients as we guide them through their healthcare journey.
respect
Respect helps form the foundation of the relationships nurses build with patients, families, and other staff. To show respect is to honour the dignity, autonomy, and different perspectives of each individual we may meet on a day-to-day basis. I believe that in the healthcare setting, respect means treating every patient, family member and staff member with courtesy and fairness regardless of the person’s background, views, identity or personal circumstances. Respect is all about valuing their beliefs, preferences and decisions as they navigate their care – even if we might not agree with them. – By maintaining this respectful approach, we can build the trust that is essential to quality care.
diligence
Diligence represents the commitment to providing high-quality care. To be diligent is to approach each task with attention to detail, precision, and care, understanding that even small mistakes can lead to significant consequences. Nurses must carefully monitor patients, double-check information, and stay alert to any changes in their condition. Practicing diligence ensures that we fulfill our professional responsibilities, supporting the health and safety of those in our care. This value reinforces our dedication to the high standards expected of us in healthcare and reflects our unwavering commitment to excellence.
open communication
Open communication is important for an effective nursing practice. It helps us understand and pass along information, collaborate with other staff, patients and families, and helps to engage with patients and their families in a meaningful and supportive way. Open communication in nursing means being honest, clear, and attentive, ensuring that information is passed on and understood accurately. It can foster a safe environment where patients feel comfortable voicing their questions or concerns regarding their car, and it helps the healthcare teams to work in sync to provide the best care possible. Having open communication helps prevent misunderstandings and supports a culture of transparency that allows the patient to make informed decisions and have trust in the healthcare setting.
