Values

As a nursing student, I think that improving my own ethical principles as well as my patients’ experiences that treatment in a medical setting may be achieved by integrating empathy, honesty, collaboration, and responsibility into my practices. As a nursing student, I’ve learned how important it is that my own values align with the care you provide. To give my patients the greatest care possible, I think it’s critical to establish a relationship with them and treat them with the same level of care.

Empathy in Nursing | Lecturio Nursing. (2023, June). Lecturio. https://www.lecturio.com/blog/empathy-in-nursing-understanding-and-cultivating-an-essential-skill/
Being able to comprehend and experience another person’s emotions while providing compassion and emotional support is known as empathy which I feel is an essential nursing practice. In nursing, I believe empathy involves recognizing a patient’s emotional and psychological needs in addition to their physical symptoms. By actively listening to patients, providing comfort, and addressing their issues in a kind and caring manner, nurses can then demonstrate empathy. For patients, this fosters a sense of security, reduces fear, and promotes trust. Nurses can establish a healing environment and improve the nurse-patient interaction by considering each patient as an individual and providing personalized care.

Touscany, J., & Touscany, J. (2023, January 11). Nurses Ranked Most Honest & Ethical – Wisconsin Center for Nursing. Wisconsin Center for Nursing. https://wicenterfornursing.org/nurses-ranked-most-honest-ethical/
Honesty is another value I feel is important to my nursing career. To be honest, one must communicate in a straightforward, honest, and transparent manner. Being truthful is essential for nurses to gain the trust of patients and their families. By giving patients clear, factual information about their diagnosis, available treatments, and care plan, nurses can demonstrate honesty. This fosters a sense of independence and self assurance in patients and assists them in making knowledgeable decisions regarding their health. Although being honest is essential it must be handled carefully, particularly when breaking bad news or other challenging circumstances. In addition to creating an atmosphere of open communication and trust between individuals, being truthful but caring ensures that patients feel valued and taken care of.

Collaboration is the process of utilizing each team member’s skills and strengths to accomplish shared objectives. For nurses to provide complete patient care, I feel teamwork is crucial. To develop and carry out effective treatment plans, nurses collaborate closely with other healthcare professionals. Nurses should make sure that each aspect of a patient’s health is taken care of such as exchanging information, talking about patient progress, and organizing care. In order to make sure that everyone is on the same page and working for the patient’s best interests, collaboration might also actively include patients and their families in the decision making process.

Nole, D. (2021, May 7). The Essential Work of Nurses is a Work of Heart and Art | What’s next. What’s next Blog. https://whatsnext.nuance.com/healthcare-ai/essential-work-of-nurses-work-of-heart-art/
I believe being responsible involves taking ownership of one’s actions, obligations, and treatment of others. Making sure patients always receive safe, efficient, and compassionate care is a key component of nursing responsibility. Nurses are in charge of keeping an eye on patients’ health, giving prescriptions, following procedures, and speaking out for their needs. It also involves understanding when to ask for assistance or, if necessary, bringing up issues with medical professionals. In nursing, being responsible involves recognizing accountability for both achievements and setbacks, making sure that patients’ needs are met at all times, and providing care in a professional and ethical manner.
