Their story

When we had to start lecturing online, we were most worried about how to keep the students interested and engaged. With in-person lectures, we could do demos and have students discuss things with each other to break up the lecture.

However, given the size of our class, we needed to use Microsoft Live events to accommodate our numbers. This meant that students would not be on camera and would not be able to talk to each other. However, there was a Q&A section they could use. This turned out to be one of the best things that ever happened to our lectures! We encouraged students to not only post content related questions, but to use it to share their opinions and participate in the discussion. We received hundreds of comments during lectures every week. They ranged from incredibly insightful to hilariously sassy. We could even publish the best ones for everyone to see.

When we are in-person, we only get to hear from a small handful of students. This year, we got to hear from everyone! It was an amazing experience and we are going to try to incorporate something similar when we go back to being in-person.

Helpful support: Joe Kim and I could not have done it without the help of our TAs. We have 40 undergraduate TAs and they were all amazing this year. We also had so much support from Christa Morrison when it came to getting the original setup organized and answering our questions related to Teams. She was incredible.
