Round 4
Final household decision
Goal
To make the final decision: stay at home or go to the community shelter.
All household members return to their original groups. Community members will join a household they have not yet visited. Mr. and Mrs. Khan will join the same household for this round.
Each household has gathered (and mapped) all the information it can gather about last night’s air raid.
Now it is time to do a final evaluation and decide on the household plan in the event of another air raid this evening: does everyone stay at home or go to the community air raid shelter in the Cheetham Hill Assembly Rooms at 111 Cheetham Hill Road.
Moderators
Continue to use the following instructions to guide the conversation so that your group has enough information to answer these questions and make a final decision:
- Will there be another bombardment and, if so, when?
- Should you move back to the community air raid shelter or stay in your own homes another night?
Household and community members
Reflect upon what you know (and do not know) and contribute to making the final group decision.
Fact find
Review the information you have recorded on the Report Form/War Report Form:
- What do we now know?
- German air raid attacks: strategy and number?
- Where have the bombs fallen in Manchester?
- How many people are injured or dead?
- Are communication and transportation systems disrupted?
- What are the conditions in the community shelter?
- Can you buy food (with ration coupons) and other supplies?
- Where will you go if your home is badly damaged?
- Based on this information, what is the threat of another bombing today?
Evaluate
To answer these questions, evaluate the information you currently have about the war and determine if it is:
- current (which includes relevant)
- authoritative
- truthful (which includes being accurate) and not harmful
- biases
Map your evidence
Continue to use the Manchester city map to visualize this information to better see what is happening. Household members find your home on the map.
Warning: Identify and evaluate your sources! This information is vital to your survival. Who do you trust and why?
Record
Use the Warden’s Report Form/War Report Form to record your findings.
Identify information gaps
Is there any additional information you might need and be able to gather?
Review all of the information you have collected and evaluated: which sources and information meet the criteria of authority, currency, and lack of bias and is the basis for your final choice?
Decide and share
Resolve the challenges faced by your household and come to a consensus as a group as to where you will take shelter. Remember: no household member can be left behind.
Once you’ve done your final household evaluation, make your final decision. Be prepared to share your decision with the other households.
