Reflection

My path to nursing has been shaped by personal experiences, deep self-reflection, and critical decision-making. Growing up in a family where helping others was a way of life, I was naturally drawn to a career focused on care and compassion. Seeing my sister thrive as a nurse on the frontlines during COVID-19 and witnessing her dedication to her patients inspired me to pursue a similar career. Caring for my grandfather was another defining experience. While it had its challenges, I found great fulfillment in helping him during difficult times. This experience taught me resilience, patience, and the profound importance of empathy in caregiving. These moments solidified my understanding that nursing is more than just a job; it is a calling that perfectly matches my strengths and interests. When I first visited Trent University, I knew it was the place for me. I had heard many positive things about its nursing program, and the moment I stepped onto campus, I felt a sense of belonging. The hands-on clinical experiences that begin in the first year were particularly appealing to me because they allowed for immediate application of theoretical knowledge in real-world settings. I was eager to combine theoretical learning with practical skills, knowing that this combination would prepare me to provide exceptional patient care. I began my studies in September 2024. While the workload was heavier than I initially anticipated, it pushed me to improve my time management and organizational skills. Creating a structured schedule helped me balance school, work, and personal life. I came to understand that not everything in life will be easy, and how I respond to challenges is critical—an important parallel to the nursing profession. Preparing for clinicals has been a stimulating and reflective experience. The curriculum has introduced me to essential nursing concepts like patient-centered care and therapeutic communication, reshaping my perspective on the profession. These principles, as emphasized by the College of Nurses of Ontario (CNO, 2022), are foundational to nursing practice and will guide my approach as I transition to real-world settings. Recent research underscores the value of integrating practical, hands-on experiences into nursing education. For example, Plotzky et al. (2021) highlight how simulations and preparatory exercises enhance students’ readiness for clinical settings. Likewise, Franklin et al. (2019) emphasize that experiential learning strategies, such as high-fidelity simulations, not only improve technical skills but also enhance students’ ability to think critically and communicate effectively in clinical practice. These preparatory activities have been invaluable for me, particularly because I learn more effectively through hands-on engagement. From practicing communication scenarios in class to working through case studies, I have been able to envision how I would handle real-life patient interactions. These activities have not only boosted my confidence but also enhanced my critical thinking skills, which will be crucial when I begin clinical placements in January 2025. Looking ahead to clinicals, I am excited to apply my knowledge in a practical setting. While I anticipate challenges, I also view them as opportunities to grow and strengthen my nursing practice. Reflecting on my journey so far, I see how my personal experiences, academic preparation, and the supportive environment at Trent University have paved the way for this next step. My journey through the first semester has not only confirmed my passion for nursing but also taught me the value of perseverance, adaptability, and critical thinking. These qualities, alongside the foundational nursing knowledge I have gained, will guide me through my clinical placements and beyond as I embark on a lifelong career in nursing.
