Introduction

About the Resource

Foundations of Listening, Speaking and Pronunciation is for learners at the beginning stages of their English journey. The resource is designed to prepare learners for Level 1 of the Conestoga English Language Program.

Each chapter includes multiple interactive activities to help learners build vocabulary, fluency, and confidence in listening and speaking. A variety of activities are presented, providing opportunities to develop both bottom-up and top-down listening strategies. Foundational aspects of English pronunciation are introduced to help learners speak comprehensibly from the start. One innovative aspect of this resource is Ear Training, which highlights the way the English of daily life is different from the English of the dictionary. Chapters culminate in speaking activities that utilize the language presented.

As the cover image reminds us, the purpose of learning a language is to communicate. This resource aims to equip English language learners with the skills necessary to pursue their academic and life goals, and have great conversations along the way.

Readers are invited to provide feedback on this Open Educational Resource and share any concerns, suggestions, errata notes, or ideas for enhancements with the Open Learning Team at Conestoga College.
