Program Learning Resources and Facilities

Labs

Appropriate footwear and clothing is required in the studios, depending on the medium being used. Open-toe shoes are discouraged, and cannot be worn during the FAS 104 Sculpture 1.

There may be limited access to Centennial’s computers and specialty labs. For your health and safety, follow any posted protocols (e.g., physical distancing, cleaning, etc.).

Equipment

In the program we use a variety of acrylic and oil-based mediums, and water- and oil-based clay. Solvents are not allowed in the studio, using safe alternatives instead.

We also use technology necessary to the professional artist, so FAS is one of the Bring IT programs for which students will need to own and use a mobile computing device that meets or exceeds the recommended hardware requirements.

Students from this program will require to own/purchase a device and software relevant to the program:

Minimum Recommended Hardware Specifications

  • MacBook Pro 13-inch
  • The recommended specifications are listed in the right side column on the Adobe website.
    OR
  • Laptop with Windows 7 or higher operating system
  • 16GB 1600MHz memory recommended to handle Photoshop operations
  • Note: new Mac laptops require adapters for multi-USB ports and USB card readers

Recommended Hardware

  • Drawing tablet
  • Backup hard drive or cloud storage

Minimum Required Software

  • Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint), 2010 or higher version

Recommended Software

You will need regular access to a computer with an internet connection. High speed broadband access (LAN, Cable or DSL) with minimum 10mbps download speed is highly recommended. Some courses have more advanced system requirements.

Software

Students have access to industry-leading software packages and bundles that can be found in rooms, labs, and podiums across our campuses. Computers at each campus will be loaded with the applications for use in your courses. To access these features, you must log in to the network using your student number. You can see a comprehensive list of software and software packages installed by room and by campus here.

In FAS we use

Adobe Photoshop and Creative Suite

MS Office programs

Students may also use other image editing and creation apps such as Procreate, Medibang, or Clip Studio Paint.

Library Collections

Instructors may make course readings available online through the eReserves service in eCentennial or as physical items that can be borrowed from a campus library on short-term loan. If your instructor is using eReserves, you will see a module in the course content on eCentennial. The list may include links to library resources like databases, articles, and eBooks; book chapters; web links; and open educational resources. Check your course outline or contact your instructor for information about where your assigned course readings are located.
