13 Academic Freedom
According to the Ontario Human Rights Commission, “academic freedom is unrelated to the duty to accommodate and should not be a defence to accommodating persons with disabilities. The purpose of academic freedom is to protect the special role of institutions of higher education in the free search for truth, and its free exposition” (OHRC, The Opportunity to Succeed: Achieving Barrier-Free Education for Students with Disabilities, 2003, p. 61).
