Artifact #1

CNO RPN Registration

My first artifact is my current RPN registration from the CNO find a nurse webpage. I have been registered with the CNO since April 29th, 2024, where I was practicing under a temporary license. On July 4th, 2024 I wrote my Rex-PN and became apart of the general practicing class. I completed my Practical Nursing diploma at Fleming College and learned key nursing knowledge, got hands on experience within the lab settings and participated in different clinical practice in various healthcare settings. I felt like Fleming prepared me to write the registration exam and helped develop my critical thinking skills to be able to answer the scenario style questions on the exam. The Practical Nursing program was challenging however, I am very proud of myself for persevering through it because all the hard work paid off and got me to where I am now. I feel like my past education and RPN experience will help me through the BScN program as I already have a foundational understanding on nursing and will help enhance my learning opportunities further. I also believe this will be a motivational factor as well and will put me in the right mind set that I can achieve this new goal of mine of becoming an RN.

Artifact #2

Deans List- Fleming College

My next artifact that I included is a letter acknowledging my achievement for being on the Dean’s List in my Fall 2023 semester at Fleming College. This was an extremely rewarding accomplishment and a privilege to be recognized for my hard work and dedication within my studies. I started my post-secondary education right out of high school and had a very difficult time adjusting to the workload and my grades during the first year of my studies reflected that. It took me until my third semester of the program to find a routine and study habits that resonated with me. I took my education very seriously and dedicated the majority of my time to my studies which helped me get onto the Dean’s List and achieve honours throughout the rest of my nursing program. This letter directly relates to nursing, as education is highly valued within the nursing profession. It is important to equip students with the proper knowledge and skills to be able to know what to do when working under their own nursing license. Having a higher average also helps prepare students to write the NCLEX and increases the chances of passing on the first attempt.  Achieving high grades demonstrates my knowledge and understanding on the concepts that I engage with in my practice as a nurse. This shows my level of competence and ability to succeed within the nursing profession.

Artifact #3

RPN Experience- Ross Memorial Hospital

Another artifact that I felt was important to incorporate into my portfolio is my nursing badge that demonstrate the experience that I have gained as an RPN at the Ross Memorial Hospital. I finished my consolidation for my RPN program on the medical unit at the Ross and shortly after I completed the program, I was offered a part-time job on that unit. I have been working on the medical floor for 8 months now and have gained so much experience and confidence just within this short period of time. As a new graduate nurse, I found the transition process difficult at the start, but had lots of support with experienced nurses and individuals within the interdisciplinary team. My previous nursing experience is beneficial to my continuing education as I can build off of the knowledge I already have and continue to learn the roles and responsibilities of a Registered Nurse. I believe that having this experience is beneficial to the nursing profession because this is how skills, critical thinking and nursing knowledge is refined overtime.

Artifact #4

Family Support

My next artifact is a picture of my family, representing the support that they have provided throughout my entire nursing journey. My family has always been there for me throughout my entire life and more then ever during my entire nursing process. They have always believed in me even when I didn’t believe in myself and pushed me to apply to Trent University’s Compressed Nursing Program when I didn’t think I would get accepted. I would not be where I am today without their love and support and I am so grateful to have them by my side, especially now with transitioning into a new program. My family’s supportiveness and encouragement relates to the nursing profession as this is an attribute that nurses should provide patients with in their care. I strive to provide my patients with these attributes as it uplifts their emotional and psychological health when managing their health related concerns. As I go through the BScN program, I hope to support my patients through new transitions in the same way my family supported me through mine.

Artifact #5

CPR and First Aid Certificate

This is my standard First Aid and CPR certificate that I completed in August 2024. This is a mandatory certification that is needed in nursing to help individuals learn vital life saving skills that could be seen on the job (Kose et al., 2019). It is important to have this certificate to show up to date proof of completion to my organization and to Trent University, so I am abled to attend my clinical placements. As a current practicing RPN, I have been apart of emergency situations where I had to utilize these skills and act quickly. As I go through the RN program, I also recognize the importance of annually renewing the course as I will see more critical situations within my different clinical settings.
