Values
Honesty
Honesty is an essential personal value of mine that facilitates trust within my own personal relationships with my family members and friends, as well as rapport within nurse-client relationships. In my experience as an RPN, I have seen firsthand how truthfulness strengthens and helps maintain the therapeutic nurse-client relationship. Patient’s feel more comfortable sharing more sensitive health related information with healthcare professionals when trust is fully established. This enables the healthcare team to implement and provide the most effective interventions and treatment plans. As stated within the College of Nurse’s (CNO) Code of Conduct, nurses must be truthful within their practice and within direct patient care (CNO, 2023). Nurses are responsible for ensuring honesty is upheld throughout the entire nurse-client relationship and if this is compromised the trust and integrity of the relationship may be at risk, which can further harm the quality of care provided.
Work Ethic
I value a strong work ethic, and I strive to uphold this principle both in my personal life and within my nursing career. I believe nurses display a strong work ethic within their practice, as there is a great responsibility and dedication that must be upheld within their practice environments. There are a lot of challenges that arise, however nurses demonstrate a committed effort
to mitigate these issues, by their adaptability to the increased workloads, patient ratios and continuous changes within the work environment. We continue to deliver safe, effective and competent care to patients and our strong work ethic is reflected in our dedication to continuous professional nursing development.
Religious Beliefs
I deeply value my Christian beliefs and strive to live by these specific religious values within my everyday life, while also respecting the religious or non-religious beliefs of others. The CNO highlights this within Principal 2 of the Code of Conduct, stating that nurses must personally reflet and understand how personal biases can potentially impact the nurse-client relationship (CNO, 2023). I believe all nurses must reflect upon their own religious values and understand their personal biases as they can conflict with patient’s own belief systems. Engaging within personal reflections allows individuals to explore their own biases to ensure patient—centered care is still being respected and client’s values are freely being expressed without fear of judgement. Client’s personal values contribute to independent nursing care decisions, and it is important for nurses to uphold these personalized beliefs.
Collaboration
A group collaborative effort is an important value that I believe is essential for achieving the best outcomes as it brings together diverse perspectives, especially when determining outcomes within patient care. I believe that nurses should incorporate the entire interdisciplinary team during the decision-making process to ensure that all aspects of care are considered from a diverse set of views. This effectively addresses all elements contributing to client’s health and determines the best possible outcomes for care. Engaging within this process ensures insights are properly evaluated and improves patient’s overall healthcare outcomes.
