Evaluation Simulation

Chapter 3: What are the key differences between each of these evaluation methods?

Formative evaluation of the participants is landing to foster development and assist in the progression toward achieving objectives or outcomes (McMahon et al., 2021). Formative assessment promotes personal and professional development and helps participants progress toward achieving objectives.

Summative evaluation focuses on measuring outcomes or achieving objectives discretely, for example, at the end of a program of study.

High-stakes evaluation focuses on an assessment with significant implications or consequences landing on the result or outcome, such as grades or progression (McMahon, et al., 2021)

Formative assessment is a great way to improve one’s performance, as it provides feedback that can help individuals identify their strengths and weaknesses and work on improving them. On the other hand, summative evaluation is more focused on measuring the outcome of a learning process, such as assigning a grade or certifying someone’s competency (Sando et al., 2013).

The summary of the Facilitator role is based on INACSL’s Healthcare Simulation Standards of Best Practice (2021, p. 55).

  1. Determine the method of learner evaluation before the SBE.
  2. SBEs may be selected for formative evaluation.
  3. SBEs may be selected for summative evaluation.
  4. SBEs may be selected for high-stakes evaluation.
