Prebriefing

Chapter 2: What is Briefing?

Briefing happens immediately prior to the simulation-based experience and involves the facilitator conducting a structured orientation to the simulation-based experience (INACSL, 2021). During briefing, the facilitators should consider reviewing the following with participants:

  • Behaviour/role expectations for participants
  • Agenda & Logistics
    • Scenario length, debriefing expectations, break times, locations of facilities, overview of the day
  • Learning goals
  • Evaluation methods
  • Use of recording equipment and observations by others
  • Orientation to environment, manikins, equipment, resources, and other technology being utilized
  • Establish a psychologically safe environment of integrity, trust and respect
    • Review procedure for professionalism, confidentiality
    • Allow and respond to questions and answers from participants
