Debriefing & Feedback
Chapter 2: Debriefing Frameworks
Why use a framework and debriefing script? (Cheng, et.al, 2016)
- Learning outcomes are improved when novice educators use debriefing scripts.
- Consistent use of a debriefing framework helps educators structure the debriefing.
- Participants anticipate the flow and nature of the conversation once they become familiar with the framework.
- Structures the conversation by outlining several phases to the debriefing process.
- Help manage time and prioritize discussion points and organize the debriefing process.
PEARLS Framework
- Eppich et.al (2015) describe an integrated conceptual framework for a blended approach to debriefing called PEARLS [Promoting Excellence and Reflective Learning in Simulation]. PEARLS is a tool designed to facilitate implementation of the framework adaptable for debriefing simulations with a variety in goals, including clinical decision making, improving technical skills, teamwork training, and interprofessional collaboration.
- The PEARLS framework integrates 3 common educational strategies used during debriefing, namely, (1) learner self-assessment, (2) providing information in the form of directive feedback and/or teaching (3) facilitating focused discussion. Select the analysis style that is best suited for the time allowed, student experience, and desired outcomes. Discussion should link back to the simulation objectives.
- The PEARLS debriefing tool incorporates scripted language to guide the debriefing. Please see PEARLS Healthcare Debriefing Tool
