Chapter 4: Learning Strategies

Library

Every institution has a library for students to use that includes access to books, magazines, journals, electronic resources, reference librarians, study spaces, and often workshops on how to use their resources. While the library may not be the most popular place for students to visit, there is a wealth of information available to students. Search for your program’s librarian and ask them if they can suggest resources to use for research, papers, assignments, etc. Librarians are often as knowledgeable about program resources as the professors are (sometimes even more).

Another incredible resource offered by libraries is their study rooms. These are amazing for hosting group study sessions or meetings for group projects. However, you need to book these as far in advance as possible because, during midterm and exam season, they fill up like rapid fire. As soon as you’ve been given your syllabi at the start of the semester, book study rooms you think you’ll need based on your midterm/test/project due dates using your institution’s library portal. You can always cancel them if you decide you don’t need the space anymore.

Your libraries will also offer printers in case you’re asked to hand in a hard-copy assignment or want to print your study notes. In most cases, you won’t be charged to print. Moreover, you can also get access to last-minute project materials such as staplers, hole punchers, scissors, etc.

Finally, your libraries may run/distribute stress-reducing activities/items during exam season that are great to participate in and take advantage of! These can include free snacks or coffee, exam prep kits, self-care packages, and more.
