Chapter 1: A New Scene

3

At some point, you decided to enrol in a Seneca Polytechnic program.

Some common reasons for enrolling in postsecondary education are to:

  • obtain employment in a particular industry
  • upgrade skills for a promotion
  • increase knowledge
  • bridge to another postsecondary program
  • gain experience
  • meet new people and create networks
  • determine what you may be interested in academically and/or intellectually
  • meet guardians’/parents’ wishes

Your “why” may be one of those common reasons, or perhaps something completely unique to you. Knowing your “why” is really important to be successful, because it should begin with defining what success means to you and what you are hoping to get from this experience.

Video: Know Your Why

Watch the video “Know Your Why” [3:59] from Michael Jr. about the difference between knowing and not knowing your “why”.

Do you see how the man knowing his “why” changed his delivery? While this exact situation of singing a song may not be applicable to you, the message remains the same: knowing your why impacts your actions.

So, what’s your “why?”
