Chapter 3: Post-Secondary Learning

19 LMS Resources

Decorative photographLearning Management Systems (LMS) are often used by colleges and universities for the delivery of educational courses and programs.  Cambrian College uses one called Moodle. It acts as a platform for learning delivery but supports a wide range of uses, including communication with your instructor/professor and peers, a place to submit your assignments, and a way of tracking your progress in the course.

Most LMS will have the same or similar functions, so even if you are more familiar with another system like Desire2Learn/Brightspace, Google Classroom or Blackboard, figuring out another like Moodle should not be difficult.

There will be a few key areas you will want to locate in the LMS:

  • Course content – often called content or modules
  • Messages – often called email, messages, or announcements
  • Grades – often called marks or grades

There will be other features available in Moodle, and your professors are each required to use Moodle as a part of their teaching. The biggest task is for you to determine how your professor has set up their course in Moodle and ensure you use it appropriately.

It is important to log in to Moodle every day and check in on your courses multiple times per week. This includes looking at announcements, emails, discussion posts, assignment feedback, upcoming deadlines, and any other important elements of the course. If you have any questions, you need to get in touch with your professor.
