Program Learning Resources and Facilities

There may be limited access to Centennial’s computers and specialty labs. For your health and safety, follow any posted protocols (e.g., physical distancing, cleaning, etc.).

Labs

Students on campus must be in full uniform when they attend program-specific lab courses. All components of the lab uniform may be purchased through the college bookstore. Uniform requirements are listed below.

Professional behaviour is required in all simulated & real work environments.

Personal Belongings:

There is no safe storage area for personal belongings. Articles left on the floor are a safety hazard. Lockers are available and should be used. Students will NOT be admitted to the Labs with coats, excess books, backpacks, purses etc. Only the supplies and implements for that particular class will be allowed.

Cleanliness:

The lab should be kept clean and tidy at all times. When using equipment, wash, disinfect or sterilize it when necessary, and put it away. The lab and working stations should be in the same condition as you found them. Clutter and untidiness will result in the deduction of marks, per course outlines. The equipment you will use in some courses must be cleaned and fingerprint-free. Soiled linens are to be disposed of as per protocol.

Personal Hygiene:

In Esthetics, you will be working in close proximity of other people. It is, therefore important that you remember to practice proper hygiene to control unnecessary body/breath odors. No perfume, cologne or strong-smelling soaps as Centennial College is a scent-free environment. Hair longer than the collar length must be neatly tied back. Jewelry should not impair the esthetician’s ability to provide treatments. A plain wedding band may be worn; however, any other rings, hanging necklaces, bracelets/bangles and dangling earrings can not only get in the way but can be dangerous and hurt either the client or the esthetician.  Nails should be short and neat, as not to hurt the person you will be working on. Dark nail polish colours are unacceptable when not in the Manicure/Pedicure class. Good grooming must be attended to at all times; after all, in the business of beauty, you must look the part.

Food and Beverages:

Food and beverages are not permitted in the lab.

Noise Level:

Noise levels should be kept to a minimum; private conversations should be left after lab hours.

Products and Supplies:

At no time are products, supplies, and equipment attachments to be removed from the lab.

Use of Electronics in the Lab:

Students are asked to turn off their cell phones while in class. If a student is expecting an important call during class, then he/she is asked to turn the phone to “vibrate” and to sit near the door for the duration of that class so as not to disturb other students when exiting the room to respond to that call. No calls are to be made or answered in the lab.

Uniform Guidelines

Esthetic students must wear the selected uniform while in labs and student clinics. The uniform consists of a black tunic and a pair of black pants. Black pants are the student’s responsibility. However, jeans and exercise stretch pant styles are not appropriate.  Black or bright colour undergarments visible through the material are also inappropriate and will not be allowed in the lab or clinic. Uniforms must be washed and pressed to maintain a professional and tidy appearance. For safety reasons, the only approved footwear is a non-marking, low-healed, black shoe – NO BOOTS are allowed!

Fitting for the uniforms will be scheduled for the first week of classes.

Equipment

All lab materials will be provided to the students. Students are responsible to purchase their kits, uniforms and textbook requirements.

Software

Students have access to industry-leading software packages and bundles that can be found in rooms, labs, and podiums across our campuses. Computers at each campus will be loaded with the applications for use in your courses. To access these features, you must log in to the network using your student number. You can see a comprehensive list of software and software packages installed by room and by campus here.

Digital Resources

Students will be required to access ClassApps platform semester 2. Further details will be provided by the professor.

Library Collections

Instructors may make course readings available online through the eReserves service in eCentennial or as physical items that can be borrowed from a campus library on short-term loan. If your instructor is using eReserves, you will see a module in the course content on eCentennial. The list may include links to library resources like databases, articles, and eBooks; book chapters; web links; and open educational resources. Check your course outline or contact your instructor for information about where your assigned course readings are located.
