20 The technical script
What to do
Define the technical script for the filming.
How to do it
The technical script serves as a guide for the filming team, providing them with detailed information about the visual and audio elements that will be captured during the shoot. It includes shot lists, camera angles, lighting setups, sound requirements, special effects, and other technical details that are essential for creating a cohesive and effective video. I Its purpose it to translate the Simulation script to the language of videographers, so that they know what they need to record and when.
To create a technical script, it is important to have a clear understanding of the requirements of the simulation script and the visual elements that will be required to bring it to life. This involves working closely with the filming director and members of the development team to create a detailed plan for the shoot, including a shot-by-shot breakdown of the action, dialogue, and camera movements.
- The technical script should include the following information: The order and timing at which the scenes will be recorded. As decision points (DP) cannot be divided during the filming. Therefore, each decision point and the filmed consequences of both the correct and incorrect options are usually scheduled to be filmed sequentially, to ensure the filming flows from one DP to the next.
- The actors that will appear in each scene.
- The materials and Props, that will be needed for each scene.
- The shots that will be taken during the scenes. To define the shots, it is helpful to ask the question: What are the crucial elements that the learner must be aware of during the scene? The answer will inform what needs to be captured in the videos. To ensure that the key elements of the simulation are captured in the filming process, it is very important the filming (technological) team be familiar with the objective, script and flow of the simulation.
- The observations that need to be considered for the proper recording of each scene. This is relevant information that has not been described and that is it important to bear in mind during the recording.
Advices
Although the simulation script will usually follow the chronological order of actions, the technical script may modify this chronological order in order to create efficiency in recording the different scenes and actors. The order of the technical script will minimize the time required to change scenes and the amount of time actors are waiting off-screen for their scene to be filmed. It is important for the simulation developers to work closely and collaboratively with the videographers in order to co-create a technical script that will achieve the desired simulation outcome.
