24 The branching scenario
What to do
Create the branching scenario in H5P.
How to do it
After editing the videos, the next step is to upload them to a virtual storing site like YouTube, Vimeo or Panopto, so that these videos can be linked to the platform that would be used for creating the branching scenario: H5P. This is a free online platform that is extremely helpful in creating interactive learning materials.
H5P provides many resources for creating presentations, quizzes, interactive images, and more. In our case, we will be using the Branching Scenario resource, which allows us to create materials that branch into different paths based on learners’ responses to the questions in each decision point (DP). To create decision-based paths (branches), we simply need to copy the simulation flow structure created during the pre-production phase.
At the end of each video, a question will appear, and the learner’s response will determine the next action that occurs within the simulation. To achieve this, the edited video clips need to be inserted into H5P, and the questions for each decision point should be inserted at the end of each video clip. The learner’s response to each DP questions, will determine the flow through the branching scenarios for each learner. Each learner experience will be unique, based on their DP responses.
The image below shows an example of how the VGS “Hello, you might be Flo!” appears in the H5P branching scenario:
The image depicts the branching scenario for “Hello, you might be Flo!” and includes a question for DP 2 that will have various responses, each leading to different outcomes and on how the situation evolves.
Advice
To ensure clarity and structure, during the post-production process, it is recommended to consistently place the correct response in the same position, which in our case is the first answer (A1). Once production is complete, the responses must be randomized.
