Appendix J: Ionization Constants of Weak Bases

Ionization Constants of Weak Bases

Table J.1 Ionization Constants of Weak Bases
Base Lewis Structure Kb at 25 °C
ammonia This image represents the Lewis structure for ammonia. Nitrogen is the central atom and is surrounded by 3 hydrogen atoms and one lone pair of electrons. 1.8 × 10−5
dimethylamine
This image represents the Lewis structure for dimethylamine. Nitrogen is central and there are two separate single carbon chains attached on either side. Nitrogen is also bonded to one hydrogen atom and one lone pair of electrons.
5.9 × 10−4
methylamine This image represents the Lewis structure for methylamine. Nitrogen is central and there is one single carbon chain attached. Nitrogen is also bonded to two hydrogen atoms and one lone pair of electrons. 4.4 × 10−4
phenylamine (aniline) This image represents the Lewis structure for analine. This structure is composed of a carbon ring in which every other carbon is double bonded. Nitrogen is attached as a substituent group and is also bonded to two hydrogen atoms and one lone pair of electrons. Due to double bonding in the carbon ring and the amine group, the ring structure only has space for 5 hydrogen atoms. 4.3 × 10−10
trimethylamine This image represents the Lewis structure for trimethylamine. Nitrogen is central and there are three separate single carbon chains attached. Nitrogen is also surrounded by one lone pair of electrons. 6.3 × 10−5
