Personal Values
Emma Gordon
Adaptability: As someone who has gown up with a menagerie of challenges, I believe that adapting to best support who you are trying to help is something very special. Allowing people to know that you care and are willing to adapt to best suite their needs is not something that many people tend to do. I remember the first time my quadriplegic sister came to visit my partner and I at our new apartment, my partner planned activities that she knew were fully accessible and my sister was able fully participate in. The joy and look on her face was so precious and it made me think how little people really consider individuals needs and are willing to go the extra step to ensure the best experience is achieved. I always strive to ensure all that I do is accessible to those I am trying to help since this is not something that all people consider, though I hope one days a society we do.
Commitment: I believe that all good things come from commitment. When a person sets their mind to something and really puts an effort into achieving their goals, there really is nothing that can stop them. I am a very committed and dedicated person. Thought my persistence, motivation, and commitment to achieving my goals, I was able to become the team captain of the 2023 Dragon Boat Canada team in Thailand for world competition. I want to apply this same level of commitment in all areas of my life and professional practice in order to provide others with the best care possible.
Reliability: I believe that ones reliably is one of their most important attributes. Being able to count on each other to follow through with their commitments builds trust, comfortability, and overall a good base for a relationship. I strive t follow through with all that I commit to such as school, working as a PSW, as well as painting a balance with my personal life. This is something that I hold very near and dear to me because following through with your word allows you to be seen as trustworthy and capable of achieving all you set your mind to.
Family: Due to all that has occurred with my sister and her spontaneous paralysis, family is something that I hold very near and dear. Since I have turned 18 I am my sisters third legal caregiver after my parents, this has allowed me to understand immense responsibility and learn how to manage all that life throws at you. It also has allowed me to better understand that it is alright to lean on others when you are in need of support which I think allows me to better handle the stresses that life presents me with.
Equality: I go through life with the mentality that everyone is human. There should be no difference in how people are treated, viewed, or perceived based on sexuality, gender, race, religion or anything else. I am a queer cisgender female and because of this, I have had first hand experience being treated different in public spaces due to my sexuality as well as gender. I have been told I should focus more on having children and raising a family rather than ‘wasting’ my time on my education; or when individuals fins out I am dating a women, still in this day and age most people are unaccepting. I know I can not speak on behalf of people experiencing racism or other forms of discrimination, though my experiences have only further motivated me to treat everyone I encounter with the same level of respect, care, and understanding despite any differences they may have.
