Introduction to My Journey

My name is Emma Garland. I am a first year student at Trent University and this is my nursing portfolio. I am majoring in a Bachelor’s Degree in the Science of Nursing, and so far am really enjoying it. From a young age I have loved working with people and helping others; Nursing is the perfect profession for me because it allows me to put empathy into action. I want to be a nurse who doesn’t just focus on the person’s illness or disease; I want to get to know the patient and build a connection with them. As a future nurse I envision making a change, even if it is a small one, in my patients’ experience with the health care system. I want to make sure patients’ voices are being heard , recognizing that they should have a say in how their care unfolds and giving them a chance to raise possible concerns about their treatment plan. Through this e-book, I invite you to share my journey of academic growth, empathy, and self-discovery as I learn about the complexities of nursing and how I can be the best nurse possible.
