Citation Styles

Three common citation styles are APA, MLA, and Chicago though there are more. Which one to use depends on your institution. Here at Loyalist College, we use APA citations in all departments. You will need to use this particular citation style consistently throughout your assignments. If you continue with your education, you may find that in other institutions, different departments within that institution, will use different citation styles. Each style has its own rules about how to cite specific sources and format assignments.

Review your assignments carefully. In the School of Business, we use APA style citations only not APA paper writing style. If an instructor asks you to write an assignment in APA, confirm if they mean the entire paper or just the citations. If it is the entire paper, you may need access to additional information such as that provided in the APA Manual.

image APA STYLE is typically used in the sciences and social sciences (e.g., psychology, sociology, nursing).
image MLA STYLE is used in many of the humanities (e.g., English, drama).
CHICAGO STYLE is usually the preferred style for history, music, and folklore.
