Create Interactive Content with H5P

HTML 5 Package (HTML)  is an open-source project powered by a vibrant community, dedicated to enhancing online content and enriching learning experiences. Its mission is to simplify the sharing of accessible content, making it easier for creators to deliver and publish their work seamlessly.

H5P is a plugin designed for existing publishing systems, allowing them to create interactive content such as videos, presentations, games, quizzes, and more!

H5P enhances active learning by providing immediate, formative, and personalized feedback, along with low-stakes assessments and increased engagement. It stands out for its ability to elevate student participation through interactive and accessible content.

H5P can be used for:

  • Creating formative assessment such as quick knowledge checks or quizzes
  • Structuring text-heavy content into dynamic, interactive experiences
  • Reusing and updating content across various courses/sections
  • Enhancing the engagement and interactivity of online course materials

Evidence-Based Practice

With H5P, interactive learning content can foster self-directed and personalized learning. This open learning platform has the potential to transform traditional teaching methods by creating a more dynamic and active learning environment. The H5P platform also allows instructors to track student performance on specific H5P activities, using this data as a tool for formative assessment and instructional guidance.
Traditional face-to-face learning is increasingly being replaced or complemented by virtual and digital campuses, which offer a variety of online activities for virtual classrooms. Among these, H5P stands out as a free, open-source platform for creating interactive content. A study compared traditional online activities with interactive H5P activities on the Wind Energy subject within an MSc in Renewable Energies program (Garcia et al., 2023). Students who participated in the traditional online activity had an average score of 7.4/10, while those who engaged with the interactive H5P activity scored slightly higher at 8.4/10. Although the statistical analysis showed no significant improvement in grades, 75% of students found the H5P activity easy, and 55% felt more motivated compared to traditional online activities. Teachers also noted increased student participation and motivation with H5P activities. These findings suggest that digital environments, especially interactive ones, are becoming integral to education, enhancing various skills and competencies.
Interactive learning resources allow students to engage with content in a more personalized manner. H5P is a collaborative platform that enables developers to create interactive content, frequently used in educational settings. Some evidence suggests that using interactive H5P resources in online education can enhance student engagement. A study on the effectiveness of H5P aimed to determine if interactive H5P resources improved learning outcomes in an online undergraduate psychology course (Centofanti & Jacob, 2023). Utilizing a randomized cross-over design, the study compared assessment results of students exposed to H5P interactive videos against a control group. The results showed no significant differences in assessment scores between the two groups. Despite low overall engagement with the interactive content, students who did engage reported a positive experience and expressed a preference for more interactive elements in future courses.
Students in Dentistry and Dental Hygiene Programs primarily receive their education through traditional didactic lectures, which often lack active learning opportunities. To enhance the learning experience, a series of interactive HTML5 content using H5P was developed for the Doctor of Dental Surgery (DDS) program at the University of Alberta (Chow et al., 2024). A survey of first-year DDS students assessed the impact and appreciation of H5P content. The survey found that 100% of participants agreed that H5P made learning easier, more enjoyable, and positively impacted their learning experience. Students particularly valued the ability to self-assess, the interactivity, and the clarification of concepts.
