The following is a list of key countries and regions where German is spoken as an official, co-official, or minority language:
- Deutschland (official language/Amtssprache)
- Österreich (official language)
- Schweiz (official language alongside French, Italian, and Romansh)
- Liechtenstein (official language)
- Belgien (official language alongside Dutch/Flemish and French)
- Luxemburg (official language alongside Luxembourgish and French)
- Südtirol – a region in Italy (official language alongside Italian and Ladin)
- Elsass – a region in France (not official language)

Take a moment to locate these countries and regions on the maps below that use different colour coding to show where:
- German is the (co-)official language and first language of the majority of the population (yellow).
- German is a co-official language but not the first language of the majority of the population (red).
- German (or a variety of German) is a legally recognized minority language in the marked country (purple).
- German (or a variety of German) is spoken by a sizable minority but has no legal recognition (turquoise).
