Week 3: Dental Conditions and Procedures

Your Module 1 assignment will have you explore a dental condition or procedure commonly found within the dental office. Your instructor will compile your class slides into a PowerPoint presentation and post it in eConestoga for you to review.

Dental Conditions

Understanding dental conditions will help you to be able to triage client concerns.

  • Conditions and disorders of the oral cavity:
    • oral cancer and leukoplakia
    • HSV 1 and canker sores
    • cysts
    • cleft lip and cleft palate
    • developmental jaw disorders (micrognathia, macroghathia)
  • Conditions and disorders of the teeth/periodontal tissues:
    • plaque and gingivitis
    • dental caries
    • TMJ and bruxism
    • impaction
    • supernumerary teeth
    • anodontia
    • dry socket
    • tetracycline staining
    • periodontitis, periodontal abscess and periapical abscess
    • hyperemia and pulpitis

Dental Procedures

Treatments and procedures are grouped into categories and assigned fee codes.

  • 00000-09999 Diagnostic:
    • examination & oral cancer screening
    • x-rays (bitewing, periapical, panoramic)
  • 10000-19999 Preventative:
    • fluoride treatments and sealants
    • cleaning, prophylaxis, scaling, and polishing
    • night guards and space maintainers
  • 20000-29999 Restorative:
    • fillings, repairs, and bonding
    • inlays, onlays and crowns
    • veneers, and tooth whitening
  • 30000-39999 Endodontic:
    • root canal
    • pulpotomy
    • pulpectomy
  • 40000-49999 Periodontic:
    • root planning
    • gum surgery, soft tissue grafting
  • 50000-59999 Prosthodontic – Removable:
    • dentures, partial or full
  • 60000-69999 Prosthodontic – Fixed:
    • bridges
  • 70000-79999 Oral and Maxillofacial Surgical:
    • extractions, impactions, tumours, and cysts
    • dental implants
    • TMJ surgery
  • 80000-89999 Orthodontic:
    • Braces
    • Thumb crib
  • 90000-99999 Adjunctive:
    • medications, anesthesia, bleaching, lab services
