Basic Concepts

Image viewing is the examination of dental radiographs. All members of the dental team may interpret radiographs, and it is the dentist’s responsibility to establish a final or definitive interpretation and diagnosis. Radiographs should be viewed immediately after mounting, and most dental radiographs are viewed chairside.

Step-By-Step Procedure

For imaging viewing images should be viewed in sequential order.

Images are examined for for the following:

  • Unerupted, missing, and impacted teeth
  • Dental caries and the size and shape of the pulp cavities
  • Bony changes, the level of alveolar bone, and calculus
  • Roots and periapical areas
  • All areas not previously examined

The image below provides the procedure for viewing mounted radiographs.

A set of instructions for viewing mounted radiographs, detailing the sequence of examining maxillary and mandibular teeth from various sides of the film mount.

In the images below, there is a view of an instructional diagram for dental x-ray film mounting sequence, with numbers indicating the order of viewing from left to right on both upper and lower rows of the mount and also an illustration of the maxilla and mandible, indicating the maxillary sinus areas in relation to the upper teeth, with “R” and “L” denoting the patient’s right and left sides respectively.

Helpful Hints

Some helpful hints for image viewing are you should view radiographs immediately after mounting and view them under optimal conditions. There should be a definite order to view radiographs, and findings should be recorded in the patient record.

All dental professionals may note significant findings, but it is essential to remember that the final interpretation and diagnosis are the responsibility of the dentist.
