Module 5 Overview

Module 5 Overview: Intraoral Techniques Basics

Module 5 will consist of Chapters 18-24.

The dental radiographer must have a working knowledge of various dental imaging examinations. Dental imaging examinations may involve either intraoral exposures (inside the mouth) or extraoral oral exposures (outside the mouth). This module will introduce the dental radiographer to the various intraoral examinations utilized in dentistry. The paralleling technique, Bisecting Technique (BIA), Bite-wing Technique, and Occlusal Technique will be the four intraoral examinations explored in this module. The dental radiographer must have an understanding of the basic concepts, terminology, and principles for each examination. The dental radiographer must also understand patient preparation, exposure sequencing, and receptor placement for each examination. Whichever type of imaging receptor or technique is used, many exposure and technique errors are possible. The dental radiographer must have a working knowledge of receptor exposure technique errors, as well as strategies for avoiding errors. This module will provide the radiographer with the knowledge to identify exposure errors, causes, and strategies for avoiding errors. The module will also provide the dental radiographer with imagining strategies for treating patients with special needs.

Chapter 18: Introduction to Dental Imagining Examinations

The purpose Chapter 18:

  • To introduce the dental radiographer to the different intraoral radiographic examinations used in dentistry
  • To define the complete mouth series
  • To describe in detail the diagnostic criteria of intraoral images

Chapter 19: Paralleling Technique

The purpose of Chapter 19:

  • To present basic concepts and to describe patient preparation, equipment preparation, and receptor placement procedures used in the paralleling technique

Chapter 20: Bisecting Technique

The purpose of Chapter 20:

  • To present basic concepts
  • To describe patient preparation, equipment preparation, and receptor placement procedures used in the bisecting technique
  • To describe the advantages and disadvantages of the bisecting technique and review helpful hin

Chapter 21: Bite-wing Technique

The purpose of Chapter 21:

  • To present basic concepts
  • To describe patient preparation, equipment preparation, and receptor placement procedures used in the bite-wing technique
  • To outline the advantages and disadvantages of the bite-wing technique and review helpful hints

Chapter 22: Exposure and Technique Errors

The purpose of Chapter 22:

  • To describe receptor exposure problems and technique errors that involve periapical and bite-wing images
  • Only diagnostic images are useful

Chapter 23: Occlusal and Localizing Techniques

The purpose of Chapter 23:

  • To present basic concepts
  •  In addition to mastering periapical and interproximal examination techniques, the dental radiographer must also master occlusal and localization techniques.
  • To describe patient preparation, equipment preparation, and receptor placement procedures for both the occlusal and localization techniques

Chapter 24: Imaging of Patients with Special Needs

The purpose of Chapter 24:

  • To introduce the dental radiographer to the problems encountered in dealing with patients with special needs
  • To manage patients with a hypersensitive gag reflex, patients with physical or developmental disabilities, pediatric patients, endodontic patients, and edentulous patients
