Module 2: Equipment and Digital Imaging Basics

Module 2 will consist of Chapters 7-8.

This module will familiarize the dental radiographer (student) with the equipment, receptor holders, and beam alignment devices used in both digital and film-based imaging. Advances in technology have produced a significant effect on the profession of dentistry and dental imaging. These advances have resulted in a unique filmless system known as Digital Imaging. Before the dental radiographer can use this specialized technology, the dental radiographer must have a working knowledge of the basic concept of equipment, concepts, terminology,  purpose, and fundamentals.

Chapter 7: Dental X-Ray Equipment

The purpose Chapter 7:

  • To introduce the dental radiographer to a variety of intraoral and extraoral dental x-ray machines
  • To detail the component parts of these machines
  • To describe the more common x-ray film holders and beam alignment devices

Chapter 8: Digital Imaging

The purpose of Chapter 8:

  • To present the basic concepts of digital imaging
  • To introduce the types of digital imaging
  • To discuss the advantages and disadvantages of digital imaging
  • This process is a relatively new technology
  •  This technology is currently an expensive investment for a dental office
