Module 8 Overview: Image Interpretation Basics
Module 8 will consist of Chapters 30 – 35.
Image interpretation is an essential part of the diagnostic process. Detailed information is beyond the scope of the dental assistant. This module will present basic concepts of image interpretation and the use of descriptive terminology to differentiate between the use of interpretation terminology and diagnosis. Interpretation of Restorations, Dental Materials, Foreign Objects, Caries, Periodontal Disease and Trauma, Pulpal Lesions, and Periapical will be explored on dental images.
Chapter 30: Introduction to Image Interpretation
The purpose Chapter 30:
- To present the basic concepts of image interpretation and to review interpretation guidelines. A very important component of patient care.
Chapter 31: Descriptive Terminology
The purpose of Chapter 31:
- To interpret dental images, the dental radiographer must be able to describe what is observed in accurate terms. Knowledge of descriptive terminology is important for communication and documentation. It is not a diagnosis; therefore, it is important for the dental radiographer to use the proper terminology for interpretation of what is observed vs making a diagnosis.
Chapter 32: Identification of Restorations, Dental Materials, and Foreign Objects
The purpose of Chapter 32:
- To review common dental restorations, dental materials, and foreign objects that may be seen on dental images
- The dental professional should interpret all dental images while the patient is present. When dental images are interpreted without the patient present, some important clinical information is not available.
Chapter 33: Interpretations of Dental Caries
The purpose of Chapter 33:
- To describe dental caries and caries detection
- To present interpretation tips and factors that influence caries interpretation
- To introduce classification of caries on dental images
- Caries is one of the most frequent reasons for obtaining dental images.
Chapter 34: Interpretations of Periodontal Disease
The purpose of Chapter 34:
- To introduce the dental radiographer to the description and detection of periodontal disease
- To present the image interpretation of periodontal disease, with an emphasis on a description of bone loss, and identification of predisposing factors
- Dental Hygienists work closely with the dentist to obtain a prescription for images to assist in the assessment of the severity of periodontal disease.
Chapter 35: Interpretations of Trauma, Pulpal Lesions, and Periapical Lesions
The purpose of Chapter 35:
- To provide a brief overview of the common features of trauma and pulpal and periapical lesions as viewed on dental images
