An Intro to my Journey
It all started sitting in a waiting room.
I was watching nurses and healthcare providers walking in and out of my grandmother’s hospital room as I waited alongside my family to be told of her latest update to care. When we were finally allowed back in to see her, it was my grandmother’s head nurse who took the time to speak with us, and guide each person through the next steps that were needed. She showed such care and understandning, listening to all our concerns and taking the time to answer every one of our questions.
Afterwards, I thought to myself about how such a seemingly small action such as listening, made all the difference in the world. I thought to myself, “I want to do that. I want to be the one to guide others in their journey.”
Here is where I find myself; beginning that journey to become a nurse I can be proud of.
About me
My name is Daniella, and I am a first year student in the Trent/Fleming School of Nursing. I am starting this journey a bit off-kilter from the traditional school route that many take. In the past, I pursued a post-secondary education and gained an undergraduate degree in Life Sciences from McMaster University. From there I have worked for the past several years as an outdoor expedition guide along the West Coast of Canada during my summers, and as a frontline worker in community shelters providing services to those struggling with homelessness and addiction in the winter months. The varied experience I have gained has led me to gain a strong understanding of myself, and have encouraged me to pursue a career in healthcare, something that I have always been passionate about.
Above, I shared a little story of a time I spent in the waiting room of my local ICU. This was just one domino in a line that cascaded down, pushing me towards pursuing further education in nursing. I am hopeful that I can one day provide the solace that I was given that day in the waiting room. It is my dream to be able to share my knowledge and experiences with those that may be struggling through difficult times, and in the process soothe their worries and give them hope for a better future. I want to be able to reach out, and empower the aspirations of those around me; and hopefully, I will continue to learn from those people too.
