FALL WEEK 6: INSTRUCTIONS & ARTICLE SUMMARY EXAMPLE
Instructions
Together, as a group, identify a list of articles relevant to your topic. Use what you have learned about OMNI to search. Create a collaborative master list. The articles should be contemporary (published within the past 10 years), and scholarly. They should primarily come from peer-reviewed journals but also may include reports or books.
When determining whether a resource is appropriate, apply the CRAAP and RADAR methods.
Once you have the master list, work as a group to assign 5 articles to each group member to summarize. Each student should have 5 unique articles, so that there is no overlap amongst group members. If you have more than 5 articles per student, look at your list again to identify the most relevant sources. If you have fewer than 5 articles per student return to OMNI and expand your search parameters (such as by using additional keywords).
Once you have your 5 assigned articles, you will each work independently to read them and create a 1-page summary. This should include the citation at the top, the abstract below (verbatim as provided by the researchers), and 5 key points or quotes that stood out from the findings. It is important to also include the page number where the information can be found, for easy reference. There is an example on the next page of how to set these 1-page summaries up.
Students are encouraged to use Reading Week to work independently on this assignment. When the class resumes in Week 8, each group member must have their 5 summaries completed and be ready to engage in a discussion about what their articles found. The 1-page summaries will be provided to our community partners as part of the literature review assignment, so students are strongly encouraged to put effort into creating these summaries, ensuring their accuracy, and checking them for proper presentation (such as spelling and grammar).
