Learning Objectives

Upon successful completion of the simulation, students will be able to:

  1. Interpret data on the patient’s chart and, acquire knowledge and understanding of safety measures related to performing nursing skills.
    • To identify the patient in the home environment.
    • To identify orders on the patient chart.
    • To identify the steps taken to provide safe care.
  2. Understand the function and care of closed drainage devices.
    • To identify the components of a JP drainage device.
    • To identify the steps and technique for milking a JP drainage device.
    • To identify types of wound drainage.
    • To identify the steps to emptying the JP drainage device.
  3. Acquire knowledge and understanding of the process for the removal of a simple dressing, assessing the incision site, and monitoring for infection.
    • To identify the steps to remove a simple dressing.
    • To identify the steps for assessing an incision site.
    • To recognize signs of infection and appropriate action.
  4. Understand how to remove a Jackson Pratt (JP) drainage device.
    • To identify the steps to remove a JP drainage device.
    • To identify the steps to apply a wound dressing.
  5. Develop communication techniques to support therapeutic interpersonal relationships based on caring, respect and dignity.
    • To understand and sustain health-promoting relationships.
    • To demonstrate respect, empathy and active participation in a nurse-patient relationship.
    • To apply therapeutic communication skills with the patient.
    • To assess a patient’s self-concept and apply a respectful approach to inquire about their self-concept and body image.
