Pre-Brief

Janet Miller is a 47-year-old female who teaches at an elementary school. She was diagnosed with right Ductal Carcinoma In Situ (DCIS) breast cancer 5 years ago, and at that time she had a right mastectomy. Janet has been experiencing back pain over the last couple of years related to having one breast, she has made the decision not to be a one-breasted woman anymore. Yesterday, she had a left mastectomy. Janet is healthy with no other comorbidities.  Prior to being discharged from the hospital, Janet was educated on how to milk and empty her Jackson Pratt (JP) drainage device. The community nurse will assess Janet’s dressing, wound, JP drainage device, and self-concept.
