18 Self-Concept

The mental image that an individual has of oneself is part of a person’s self-concept. A person’s thoughts about their identity can be conscious or unconscious. Janet is at risk of altered self-concept related to her body image from her mastectomy surgeries, which can create a body image stressor. For women, the change of appearance can create feelings of altered femininity due to the loss of one or both breasts. As her community nurse, it is your role to assess Janet to determine if she has a healthy self-concept. Your assessment is vital to help Janet adjust to alterations in self-concepts (Potter et al., 2019).
