Communicating for the Greater Good

Improving your communication skills means that you can now communicate more effectively with the people around you,  whether it’s informing, teaching, comparing, persuading, describing, or anything else you’d like to accomplish.

Here are some ways you might apply your new found skills in the real world:

  1. Volunteer at a local food bank or charitable organization and then write an article or blog type report about your experience. Post it on your own social media or on another public forum.
  2. Research different types of currencies and compare values of coins, e.g., international students could compare Canadian coins and currency from other countries. Create an infographic with the purpose of providing information to international students about Canadian money, the value of the coins and how to know which type of coin to use when.
  3. Interview a local volunteer or employee at a food bank or other charitable organization and post a summary of the interview with information for other students about where they can get help if they need food or household items.
  4. Interview a staff or faculty member in the international department to learn about the services offered by the college available to international students. Create an article for the campus newsletter and/or make this available to future students in another creative way.
  5. Write a blog about community resources – do research on area or topic of your choice relevant to students or the college community. Post it on your own social media or on another public forum.
  6. Develop a Frequently Asked Questions blog or article about the college, a specific program, or a community activity or group and post the blog or article on the campus newspaper or web site or post the information on the community channel in the appropriate format.
  7. Develop a Top Ten list of some aspect of the NC life and create a handout to be distributed at Open House.
  8. Interview a health care professional or social services professional and develop a podcast script.

The possibilities are endless. How will you use your improved communication skills for the greater good?
