Introduction to Genetics

This lesson introduces students to basic genetic concepts, including DNA, genes, and inheritance patterns. The hook section has students explore an interactive Scratch project that visualizes DNA structure and base pairing. The working on it section allows students to deepen their knowledge of specific genetic topics using the Jigsaw learning strategy. Students will research their topic and create a 5-question quiz in Scratch to share with the class.

Introduction:

Have students explore the DNA Explorer Scratch project, which allows them to interact with a virtual DNA strand, pairing bases and seeing how genes are encoded.
After 5 minutes, split the class into 6 groups. Assign topics related to genetics:

• DNA Structure & Function
• Genetic Mutations
• Punnett Squares & Inheritance
• Genetic Disorders
• Genetic Engineering (CRISPR & GMOs)
• Mendelian vs. Non-Mendelian Inheritance

Working Process:

Students research their assigned topic, answering key questions:

• What is this concept?
• How does it function in the human body?
• What are real-life examples of this concept?
• 

Once students complete their research, they will collaborate to modify a pre-made Scratch quiz template to match their topic. Each group must:

• Adjust the questions and answers to align with their research.
• Experiment with Scratch features (e.g., animations, sound effects, custom sprites).

The quiz is to be made on Scratch using the premade code link. The goal is to have students adjust the quiz to fit their research and play around with different Scratch features.

Consolidation:

Students post their research notes and Scratch quizzes on Google Classroom.

Exit Ticket: Students review another group’s research and complete their quiz.
