What is Code Combat?

This is an online platform that teaches users how to program and code in languages such as Python and Javascript. It uses game-based play to have users explore different challenges by writing code. The codes increase in difficulty over time, which supports beginner users to advanced users. The fantasy world that users engage with features the ability to unlock customized characters, puzzles and prizes. It has a multiplayer mode where users can collaborate on tasks. It promotes learning in a fun and engaging way while providing immediate feedback.

How is it used in a classroom setting?

Codecombat can be effectively used to engage students in learning how to program through interactive gameplay. Teachers can create classroom accounts for their students, and students can create their personal accounts. The teacher can provide an overview of the platform and go through a few examples. Students will be encouraged to collaborate to complete coding challenges in groups. Additionally, complete tasks individually. This platform is great as it provides immediate feedback of what needs to be fixed and steps to do so. Students’ progress can be monitored easily through observing the levels students have completed and the badges and awards they have earned. This can be a motivational tactic for students as it encourages them to complete their assigned tasks. For example, each day, you may assign students to complete a certain level and allow them to progress further if they want to. This can be used as an assessment and evaluation tool. If students have access to technology at home, they can also play around with this coding resource for fun.
