65 Chapter 52: Chase Game – Scratch Cards

Chase Game – Scratch Cards
Introduction
This code creates a game where you essentially have one character attempting to collect an object that is bouncing around the screen. In this specific case, it is a robot in space trying to collect stars. The coding includes a scoring system that counts the number of stars collected with a final score goal. The coding of this game was found and created via Scratch Cards and is a great way to engage students in the creation of coding. The game offers a level of tinkering as well if the students wish to adapt the game, change backgrounds, change characters or objects being collected or even change the scoring system or goal. One criticism that I would have for the coding is the difficulty level of the game. I noticed after creating it that if you press play and don’t ever move the Sprite that eventually the object (in this case the star) will hit the character enough times on its own that you will win the game without even really doing anything. This was an observation I made however, I can also recognize that students young enough will try to move the Sprite around and chase the object due to their immediate need to try and succeed or play the game. On initial use I would say most students will not catch on to staying still and waiting however, after a period of time they will likely catch on. I think this could make the game boring after a bit but it could also leave room for higher grades to attempt to adjust or add to the coding in order to elevate the game or make it more difficult.

How it might be used in the classroom
I would say the creation of this code is best for students from grade 5+. However the actual playing of the game could be easily used for younger grades. Turning coding into a game and allowing students to explore and play is a great way to engage students in the content and allow them to really explore the world of coding. Having the coding create a game can also allow for competition between peers and lets students challenge themselves further by simply tinkering and adjusting the code to try and make the game more difficult.
