Introduction to Nutrition
This lesson aims to introduce students to the different food groups within Canada’s Food Guide. Students will understand what foods belong in what group and the role and importance of each food group on their body. The hook section has students explore a refrigerator with different kinds of foods. As students explore the refrigerator, they learn what foods are associated with what food group. The working on it section will allow students to deepen their knowledge of a certain topic within nutrition using the Jigsaw learning strategy. Students will be separated into groups, each given a topic. They will research the topic and find the information below, and will use Scratch to create a 5 question quiz to be shared with the class.
Introduction:
Have students explore the Nutrition Presentation on Scratch. This will act as a hook to get students excited about food. After 5 minutes, split the class into 6 groups. Assign 2 groups to be the experts in Fruit and Vegetables, another 2 groups to be the experts in Protein and another 2 groups to be experts in Whole Grains.
Working Progress:
Students conduct research on their specific food group. What belongs in their food group with examples, why their food group is important and its general role within the human body/diet. Once students have conducted research and made detailed notes, students in the group work together to create a 5 question quiz to go along with their collected information. The quiz is to be made on Scratch using the premade code link. The goal is to have students adjust the quiz to fit their research and play around with different Scratch features.
Consolidation:
Students share and post their detailed notes along with their constructed quiz on google classroom. Exit ticket: Students read one group’s research and try the groups’ quiz to go with it.
Next lesson: Further explore each group’s research in depth, and attempt all the quizzes to further learn.
