r and K selected species

Description

Use coding to show the growth patterns of r and K selected species. Demonstrates factors that affect growth rate including: carrying capacity, population, growth rate etc. A loop is used to demonstrate the relationship between each environmental factor that is used to generate the graph.

Introduction

  1. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IF8VveNsGEI&t=76s

This is a video about population dynamics. Well known scientist Hank Green explains the concept of introducing predator species in an attempt to control invasive species populations. Video runtime: 11:37. This can be used to introduce the idea of populations having their own growth/regression that can be predicted/affected based on certain factors.

Working On It

  1. Students are provided with real world scenarios of both r and k species types. Students will use the provided information and input the values within the code and observe the patterns that emerge from the graph. Students will need to interpret graph data to show an understanding of the relationships between each factor and population growth.
  2. Students will explore these relationships further by creating their own scenarios and making predictions before inputting it into the code. Students can also add in new variables within the code that they believe can affect growth as a form of extension.

(This code could also be used to show students exponential functions and how to graph them)

Consolidation

  1. Whole class discussion (10-15 minutes)
  2. 3 minute mini group presentation of findings after exploring/manipulating the starter code given
  3. Students who are listening to each mini presentation are encouraged to take notes on other students tinkering and their results
