Reigniting the inner mathematician

Description

Students will engage in altering code on scratch to see the effects of changing variables and report their findings back through discussion. This is meant as a refresher on concepts learned in previous years and as a way to engage in manipulatives for math.

Introduction

  1. Provide students with a visual demonstration of code in action, ask them to describe what they think is happening
  2. Show students relationship between graph and equation y=mx+b
  3. Then show them the code and ask them to alter the code to get different results

Working On It

  1. Students will alter the variable sections of the code string and continually test it to produce different effects on the graph and better understand the specific roles of the variables.
  2. Students will be given goals to reach (try to flatten the graph, try to steepen the graph, etc.).
  3. Students may also be asked to create a chart to jot down the values changing in their overall findings. (i.e, create a graph that reflects y=3x+4, be asked to chart the Y values, etc.).

Consolidation

  1. Will ask students to describe what variables in the code perform what role in the code string as well as the role in the equation y=mx+b.
  2. Ask students to identify variables and demonstrate the patterns and rate of change via a Chart and Graph
