Progression and Graduation Requirements

Graduates at convocation

Progression Requirements

The standard passing mark in each course is 50% (equivalent to a D grade or 1.0 grade points) unless otherwise stated. Certain courses require minimums greater than 50% and/or have mandatory components to achieve a passing grade.

Students are required to complete any pre-requisites before enrolling in a course. Failing a course with a co-requisite may require repeating both courses.

Students are expected to achieve, each academic term a Term Grade Point Average (TGPA) of at least 2.0 to remain in Good Academic Standing. Students who do not achieve the minimum TGPA will be placed on either Conditional or Probationary Standing. Continued unsatisfactory academic performance may require the student to be placed on suspension or debarment.

Graduation Requirements

Students must pass all courses on the model route and any other program requirements, including experiential learning (e.g., co-operative education, field/clinical placements, etc.), in order to graduate.

Students must also achieve an overall program Grade Point Average (GPA) of 2.0 to be eligible to graduate.

Students must have completed at least 25% of the program at Centennial College, excluding prior learning assessment and recognition (PLAR) and transfer credit (TCR).

Students must complete the requirements of the program in effect at the time of graduation unless the Dean or designate approves alternative arrangements in writing. This requirement includes any changes made to future semesters during the student’s studies but does not include changes in semesters that have already been completed unless required for the future semester courses.

GPA stands for Grade Point Average. Grade points are numeric values attached to each letter grade that is awarded for each course you have completed. GPA is calculated by dividing the total number of grade points earned by the total number of credit hours.

The number of courses required to graduate depends on your model route. The number of courses differs from program to program. All courses included in the program model route must be completed in order to graduate.

Time limits to complete your program depends on the typcial duration of the program if it were taken without unscheduled breaks. Based on the original date of registration, the time limits are:

  • One year programs – up to two years
  • Two year programs – up to four years
  • Three year programs – up to five years
  • Four year programs – up to six years.

If you fail one course, you may re-enroll to repeat the course the next time that course is offered. If that course is a pre-requisite for another course, you cannot progress to that course until you have successfully completed the failed course. You will be put in Conditional or Probationary Academic Standing. See the Academic Standings, Progression, and Re-Admission for Diploma and Certificate Programs Policy.

If you fail a course or do not take a course in the required sequence you may have a sequencing problem because courses may be taught only once per year and you may not be able to take the failed course for at least another full year. This may mean it will cost you time to get back in proper course sequence. Refer to the program model route for current pre-requisite requirements. When you fail a course, you cannot be guaranteed the opportunity to repeat the course the next time it is offered. This will depend on available space after all regularly scheduled students have registered for the course.

Your Success Advisor can assist you in determining when courses can be repeated and adjusting your model route.

Only the attempt that has the higher mark will be used to calculate your GPA. However, both attempts will appear on your academic transcript.

You are allowed to repeat a course two times. A third repeat will require the Dean or a designate’s approval.

What happens if I drop a course?

If you drop a course before the deadline date, no grade is assigned and the course is removed from your record. Courses on a student’s record after the withdrawal deadline become a part of the student’s permanent official record. Make sure you complete the Course Add/Drop Form, have it signed by your Success Advisor and submit it to Enrolment Services on or before the deadline date.

Withdrawing from a course or program or reducing the number of courses in which you are enrolled in the semester may have some consequences including the following:

  • Your eligibility for an OSAP loan may change.
  • The duration of your studies may be extended and/or graduation may be delayed.
  • You may need to incur additional fees.
  • Any sponsorship arrangements you have in place may be affected.
  • Your eligibility for inter-collegiate sports may be affected.
  • Prerequisites for upcoming semesters may be impacted.

Check the academic and planning calendar to see the semester dates and deadlines for making course changes, withdrawing with a partial refund, and withdrawing without academic penalty.

To graduate from a program you must submit an Application to Graduate form through myCentennial. Applications should be submitted during your final semester. See the Steps to Graduate webpage for a graduation checklist, instructions on how to apply to graduate, and convocation information.
