6 Village Relations
The network of villages scattered across the continent – Ember, Swift, Flow, Flash, Soil – represents a fractured mosaic of regional powers bound by necessity but divided by history and ambition. Each village possesses a unique character, shaped by its dominant elemental Chi affinity, its specific traditions, and its experiences during and after the Great Chi War. Survival demands a degree of cooperation: trade routes must be maintained, intelligence on rogue factions like the Kaichis or hazardous phenomena like Cursed Chi must be shared, and sometimes, joint military operations are unavoidable. Yet, beneath this pragmatic surface boils a potent brew of rivalry and mistrust. The acknowledged strength of the Ember Village breeds both cautious respect and envious resentment. Historical feuds, disputes over Chi-rich territories or vital resources, and the political machinations of ambitious or corrupt leaders constantly strain alliances. Loyalty tends to be fierce towards one’s own village, and while cross-regional partnerships exist, they are often relationships of convenience, easily fractured when interests diverge. This precarious balance dictates the flow of people, goods, and information across the land, making inter-village politics a dangerous game where today’s ally could easily become tomorrow’s rival in the ongoing struggle for power and stability.
