Progression and Graduation Requirements

Progression Requirements

Program Completion Requirements

At the beginning of each course, students will be informed regarding the specific requirements of that course and the way in which the learning will be evaluated.

1.    Final grades reflect the students’ performance on a variety of term and final testing components.

2.    A “C” grade is required for satisfactory completion of a course (including all English courses).

3.    Promotion into the next semester of a program requires a ‘C’ grade in all core courses in the current semester (including English COMM courses).*

4.    Clinical application courses will be graded on a pass/fail basis.

5.    A student who has failed two courses in one semester will be suspended for a minimum period of two semesters.

6.    A student who does not successfully complete any one of his/her required courses as scheduled, must contact the Program Coordinator prior to registration for the next semester. Students must complete all the courses in their current semester before taking any courses in the following semester. Please see model route for prerequisite information.

7.    When a student repeats the identical course and achieves a higher grade, the new grade will replace the previous one in the calculation of the cumulative GPA and the original lower grade will no longer be included in the Cumulative Grade Point

Average (GPA). The higher grade for the course will be used for the GPA calculation but both attempts (grades) are recorded on the academic transcript.

8.    The number of repeats allowed for a course/unit is established by the School or Department. In the Practical Nursing Program for Internationally-Educated Nurses (Fast-Track), a course may be repeated twice. A student may be able to take a course for a third time if special permission is granted from the Chair of the program.

9.    Final promotion from a program qualifies the student for a Centennial College Diploma. To achieve final promotion a ‘C’ or ‘S’ grade is required in all courses in the model route throughout the program including the English courses.

Student must complete the entire program within 2 years from the start of the program. Students who cannot complete the program will be removed and/or transferred into another program.

Graduation

Students must successfully complete all program requirements in order to be eligible for graduation and may be required to complete specific requirements prior to progressing from one level of their program to the subsequent level.

The student is responsible for knowing the requirements for graduation from their program of study. The following conditions must be met to graduate:

·       Student must have completed, at Centennial College, at least twenty-five percent of the courses for their credential, excluding Prior Learning Assessment and Recognition (PLAR) and Transfer Credit (TCR).

·       Students must successfully complete all courses in the program.

·       Students registered in a co-op program must successfully complete all co-op requirements.

·       Students must complete the requirements of the program in effect at the time of graduation, unless the Dean or designate approves alternative arrangements in writing. This requirement includes any changes made to future semesters during the student’s studies, but does not include changes in semesters that have already been completed unless required for the future semester courses.

Credit for Prior Learning

There are two ways to obtain Centennial College credit for prior learning:

  1. Transfer Credit – You may be granted transfer credit at Centennial for courses you have taken at an accredited postsecondary college or university.
  2. Prior Learning Assessment and Recognition (PLAR) – PLAR helps you demonstrate learning acquired through past study or work. You may obtain PLAR credit by going through a challenge process which may include an exam, interview, portfolio, or other mechanism.

You are encouraged to apply for any of these credits if you think you are eligible. The maximum number of credits allowed is 75% of your program credits.
