When we have the privilege to work with individuals or communities it is important to remember, they are the experts in their culture and we are on the journey with them as they have invited us along.

Working with select populations means that we need to be aware of many different components that are important to each community or culture.  Population means a particular section, group, community or type of people in an area or country.  There is many levels of intersectionality that we will explore in this chapter.

Culture is based on beliefs, values, economic status, perceptions, actions and is influenced from what you learned from your family, your community, and society. It is important to be able to explore each population from their experience and knowledge.  How you perceive other cultures and the ability to view from a different culture takes ongoing personal reflection, education, and conscious effort .

We will always be learning about another’s culture, as we do with our own.  It’s important to focus on the journey that is very long, winding, has many experiences, successes, challenges and not just focus on the destination.
