2S Twin Spirit people (Indigenous), L – Lesbian, G – Gay, B– Bisexual, T – Transgender, Q – Queer, I – Intersex (considers sex characteristics beyond sexual orientation, gender identity and gender expression), + is inclusive of people who identify as part of sexual and gender diverse communities, who use additional terminologies

2SLGBTQI+ terminology used within the Government of Canada

2SLGBTQI+ terminology is continuously evolving. As a result, it is important to note that this list is not exhaustive and these definitions are a starting point to understanding 2SLGBTQI+ identities and issues. Different 2SLGBTQI+ individuals and communities may have broader or more specific understandings of these terms. (1) 

Gender is about the person and their identity, and how they see it, feel it and express it.  Gender often understood as a personal identity, but it can also be thought of as cultural. Around the world, masculinity and femininity have different meanings, presentations and roles across the world.  Gender identities and expressions vary greatly, so the definitions of the self identity terms often vary as well.

Why we need gender fluidity – Nicholas Metcalf. By Ted Talks.  In his talk, Nick Metcalf gives insight into his experiences being a two spirit, and explains why gender fluidity is necessary in today’s world. Cetanzi – Nicholas “Nick” Metcalf, MSW, is an enrolled member of the Rosebud SiouxTribe, South Dakota where he grew up. Nick attended the University of South Dakota for their Bachelors in Science, and received their MSW in Family Therapy at Augsburg College. Nick has worked in non-profit management throughout most of their professional career. Nick currently works for the MN Department of Human Services and is an active volunteer on a variety of community projects and initiatives impacting communities of color(5).

For some people who have transitioned from one gender to another may simply identify as female or male. Others may also identify as trans, as a trans woman or a trans man. Some people may identify as trans and not use the labels “female” or “male.” Others may identify as existing between male and female or in different ways beyond the binary of male/female.

2SLGBTQI+ Refugees

In many countries those who identify with 2SLGBTQI+ suffer greatly from their country, community, legal system.  In many countries this is punishable by death.

Canada has a proud history of providing protection to and helping to resettle the world’s most vulnerable groups. That includes those in the lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer, intersex, and additional sexually and gender diverse (LGBTQI+) community.(15 )

Important Other terminology(17)

Cisgender

An individual whose gender identity aligns with the sex they were assigned at birth.

Diverse sexual orientation and gender identity and expression (SOGIE)

Individuals who are perceived to have a sexual orientation or gender identity or expression that does not conform to socially accepted SOGIE norms. Such individuals include, but are not limited to, lesbians, gay men, and bisexual, trans, intersex and queer individuals.

Gender

The characteristics, attitudes and behaviours that are socially or culturally associated with a person’s sex. The categories and specific characteristics associated with gender may vary culturally. An individual’s gender includes gender identity and expression, both of which can be fluid and flexible. An individual’s gender identity and expression may or may not conform to the socially accepted gender norms of their culture.

Gender identity

Each person’s internal and individual understanding of their gender. It is their sense of being a woman, a man, both, neither, or anywhere along the gender spectrum. A person’s gender identity may be the same as, or different from, their birth-assigned sex. A person’s understanding of their gender may change.

PFLAG

Founded in 1973, PFLAG is the first and largest organization dedicated to supporting, educating, and advocating for LGBTQ+ people and their families(18)
