Clinical Placement
Clinical placement is scheduled hours of activities intended to give students hands-on experience in a hospital or health care setting. This instructional setting is characterized by
- activities that are an integral component of the curriculum of the program and necessary for the successful completion of the program, and
- activities in which students are continually supervised directly by college staff or individuals working on behalf of the college (MTCU, 2007).
A clinical practicum involves work experience under the supervision of an experienced registered or licensed professional (e.g., preceptor) in any discipline that requires practice-based work experience for professional licensure or certification. Clinical placements are generally unpaid and, as the work is done in a supervised setting, typically students do not have their own workload/caseload (CEWIL Canada, 2020).
The Clinical Placement(s) is a mandatory requirement for completion of the program (i.e., the clinical placement cannot be optional unless students are able to access another optional and equivalent activity required for completion of the program).
