Biceps (Relaxed and Flexed)
Biceps Relaxed
- Begin by asking the client to bend their elbow 90˚, palm facing up to find the midpoint of the arm
- You will need to landmark and measure the midpoint of the arm
- Locate the acromion process and place the 0 mark on the tape measure there
- Measure to the elbow and locate the midpoint between the acromion and elbow
- Place a small X on the client’s arm at the midpoint
Client relaxes arm to take this measurement
Biceps Flexed
- Client should be standing in a relaxed position, arm raised to a horizontal position in the frontal plane, elbow at 90˚
- Before asking the client to flex, set up the tape measure on the client’s arm
- The measurement is taken at the largest circumference while flexed
Be quick to position the tape as it can be difficult for the client to maintain a flexed position for a long period of time
