Understanding Your BIA Assessment
Provided below are descriptions of the various information that is provided through BIA assessments:
Resistance:
- The component of impedance related to the dissipation of energy in a conductive medium Measured in ohms (Ω)
Reactance:
- The component of impedance related to the storage of energy in a conductive medium Measured in ohms (Ω)
Impedance:
- The body’s inherent resistance to an electrical current
- Muscle acts as a conductor of the electrical current, adipose tissue acts as a resistor. Measured in ohms (Ω)
Body Fat %:
- Percentage of total body weight that is fat
Fat Mass:
- Total weight of fat mass in the body
Fat Free Mass (FFM) :
- Composed of muscle, bone tissue, water, and all other fat free mass in the body
Total Body Water (TBW):
- Amount of water in the body
Basal Metabolic Rate (BMR):
- Number of calories metabolized at rest during 24 hours and is the key to effective weight management
Daily Energy Expenditure (DEE):
- The total number of calories you burn for energy each day
Dry Lean Mass (DLM) / Lean Dry Mass (LDM):
- The combination of the weight attributed to the protein and the bone mineral in your body
Lean Mass / Lean Body Mass (LBM):
- Component of body composition, calculated by subtracting body fat weight from total body weight
- Included in this mass is the weight of the essential fat in the organs, central nervous system, and bone marrow
Desirable Range:
- Healthy range for fat % and fat mass
